Isopleths for Concentration of Total Excess Uranium in Soil in 1986 (redrawn from Stevenson and Hardy 1993)
Notes:
In a paper published by Stevenson and Hardy in Health Physics, the estimated the amount of uranium in soil around the site to be about 4,000 kg, This value was significantly less than the value we estimated in our research. A number of factors were not taken into account by Stevenson and Hardy. The Stevenson and hardy value was based on samples taken in 1986, and they would not have reflected the total amount of uranium that was released over time from the facility. They limited the volume of soil to only 5cmdepth , when it is known that the uranium released by the facility existed down to a depth of 10 cm. No account was taken for the mobility of uranium in soil, and approximately 35% was in a soluble and readily mobile chemical form. There were other factors as well that resulted in the Stevenson and hardy value being lower that what really existed.
