Therefore, for now, the responsibility of protecting the Ogallala must lie with the farmers. They must evaluate how much water they actually need and what technologies they could use like the LEPA sprinkler to reduce pumping. Mistakes have been made in the past, but there is still time to take action and make sure the aquifer is still around for generations to come.
